Why these exist

The default assumption about government data is that you have to ask for it, and that asking takes weeks. Often it isn't true: the number is already published, in a form nobody has made usable. A tool that closes that gap is worth more than an article asserting the same fact, because you can point it at a question we never thought to ask.
